MAINTAINING F-1 STATUS

Students in F-1 status must comply with U.S. immigration regulations as well as school policies while studying at American Language Center.

Full-Time Study Requirement

F-1 students at American Language Center must attend at least 18 hours of ESL instruction per week. Students are expected to remain enrolled full-time and attend classes regularly in order to maintain valid F-1 status.

Academic and Attendance Requirements

All F-1 students must comply with the school’s Academic Policies and Attendance Policies. Poor attendance or failure to meet school requirements may affect a student’s standing and may also affect immigration reporting obligations.

Address Updates

American Language Center is required to maintain certain student information in SEVIS. Because of this, students must report any change of address within 10 days of moving. Your current page specifically states this requirement.

Employment Restrictions

F-1 students may not engage in unauthorized employment. Employment in F-1 status is restricted and may require authorization from the school, USCIS, or both, depending on the type of employment. Unauthorized employment is prohibited and employment should not be considered a source of financial support.

Financial Responsibility

Students must maintain sufficient financial support for the duration of their studies.

Travel and Immigration Documents

Students should keep their immigration documents valid and accessible. After entering the United States, the current F-1 page instructs students to retrieve their electronic I-94 record and email copies of their Form I-20, passport, and I-94 to the school for processing.

DHS/SEVP Compliance

American Language Center is required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to maintain accurate student information in SEVIS. Students must comply with all applicable DHS/SEVP regulations while enrolled.

If You Have Questions

Students should contact the school promptly if they have questions about:

  • attendance
  • address changes
  • travel
  • enrollment
  • employment restrictions
  • immigration document requirements
