ACADEMIC POLICIES

At American Language Center, students are expected to attend regularly, participate actively, and make steady academic progress. The information below provides a general overview of important academic expectations, enrollment requirements, and classroom policies.

Enrolled students should refer to the Student Handbook and Gateway Portal for the full and official version of all school policies, procedures, and requirements.

Attendance Expectations

Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes, arrive on time, and participate fully in classroom activities. Absences, tardiness, early departures, and lack of participation may affect academic progress and, when applicable, immigration status.

Full-Time Enrollment Requirements

For school purposes, non-F-1 students are generally considered full-time when enrolled in a program that provides at least 12 instructional hours per week.

For F-1 students enrolled in English language training, full-time enrollment is 18 hours per week in accordance with applicable immigration requirements. F-1 students are responsible for maintaining full-time enrollment unless an authorized exception applies.

Grading Overview

Students receive grades based on their performance in coursework, quizzes, tests, writing assignments, projects, presentations, and other assigned assessments, depending on the course. Final grades are recorded for each course and are used to calculate the student’s Grade Point Average (GPA). Missing or incomplete work may negatively affect the final course grade.

Academic Progress and Probation

Students are expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout their program. Academic performance is reviewed regularly, and students who do not meet the school’s minimum academic standards may be placed on Academic Probation. Continued lack of academic progress may result in further academic action, including dismissal from the program.

Placement and Level Progression

Students are placed into classes based on placement testing, prior academic performance, and other relevant academic information. Advancement to the next level depends on successful completion of the current level and meeting 2.0 GPA and other school’s academic standards. Placement and level changes are subject to school review and approval.

Registration and Schedule Changes

Students must complete registration for each semester according to school deadlines and procedures. Registration helps determine class schedules and course placement. Schedule change requests should be submitted as early as possible and are reviewed based on availability, academic appropriateness, and other school considerations.

General Classroom Expectations

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and responsible manner at all times. This includes following instructor directions, participating appropriately, avoiding disruptive behavior, and contributing to a positive learning environment. Visitors are not permitted in classrooms without prior school approval, and children are not permitted in classrooms or school facilities.

Technology Expectations

Cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices may be used in class only when permitted for educational purposes, including coursework, classroom activities, or testing. Unauthorized, distracting, or disruptive use of technology during class is not permitted. Instructors may limit or prohibit device use depending on the activity or lesson.
